The seminar „1.01.811 Systematic Reviews in Educational Technology and Learning Design“ was a research-oriented academic project designed to immerse students in the methodology of systematic reviews (SR) within the field of educational technology and learning design. The project successfully provided a hands-on learning experience, allowing students to actively engage in the systematic review process under the guidance of experienced facilitators.
Achievements
The primary goal of this project was to enable students to develop independent research competencies through the systematic review methodology. By the conclusion of the seminar, students successfully:
- Understood the fundamental concepts of systematic reviews in educational technology.
- Learned to formulate research problems and review questions.
- Gained proficiency in search strategies and data management tools.
- Engaged in group-based learning and peer feedback processes.
- Conducted systematic reviews using professional software such as EPPI Reviewer Web.
- Developed their research findings into publishable academic papers.
Structure and Phases
The seminar was structured into four main phases:
- Introduction to Systematic Reviews (4 weeks): Students were introduced to the methodology, key frameworks such as PICO and PRISMA, and prominent systematic reviews in the field.
- Developing Research Questions and Search Strategies (2 weeks): Students collaborated in groups to formulate research problems and devise search strategies.
- Implementation of Research Protocol (4 weeks): This phase included data collection, abstract screening, and coding using EPPI Reviewer Web.
- Data Synthesis and Report Writing (4 weeks): Students analyzed and synthesized their data, culminating in the writing of research papers.
Learning Outcomes
The project successfully fostered an active learning environment through:
- Workshops and Expert Guidance: A series of interactive workshops led by international scholars, including Dr. Melissa Bond and Dr. Oliver Schoenbeck, provided students with practical insights into systematic review methodologies and tools.
- Hands-on Software Training: The seminar incorporated the use of EPPI Reviewer Web for systematic data management, alongside reference management tools like Zotero and Citavi.
- Collaborative Research: Students worked in teams to enhance peer learning and social interaction.
- Publication Opportunity: Several participants were encouraged to submit their research findings to „forsch! – Studentisches Online-Journal der Universität Oldenburg.“ Unfortunately, the journal was discontinued. Other opportunities are being sought for submission.

Final Results
By the end of the seminar, students successfully developed systematic review papers that demonstrated their ability to engage in independent research. The seminar equipped them with valuable skills in critical analysis, digital literacy, and interdisciplinary problem-solving, essential for their academic and professional careers.
This project aligned with the objectives of „Forschendes Lernen“, fostering a research-intensive learning environment where students became proactive contributors to the academic discourse in educational technology and learning design.
